Former Dome Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has strongly criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, for attempting to silence her and other party members. In a recent interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Aswoa Safo emphasized that freedom of speech is a constitutional right guaranteed to every Ghanaian, and no individual has the authority to suppress it.

Adwoa Safo Fires Back at NPP General Secretary, Defends Freedom of Speech

Her comments came in response to the General Secretary’s directive urging party members to refrain from speaking to the media about internal party matters currently under resolution. Adwoa Safo, a prominent figure within the NPP, dismissed the directive as unjustified and questioned the General Secretary’s credibility to issue such a statement.

“We all have the right to express ourselves, including me,” Awoa Safo stated. “The General Secretary only started speaking publicly after our electoral defeat, going around giving explanations. He even suggested that people shouldn’t hold him accountable for the loss.”

Adwoa Safo also referenced the General Secretary’s recent radio interview, where he criticized former President Akufo-Addo for allegedly ignoring party advice during meetings. She challenged his authority to make such public statements while attempting to restrict others from doing the same. And now, when I wish to speak, an announcement is made. What authority does he have to do that?” she questioned. “If he wants to communicate with me formally, it should be private. This statement is too ambiguous, and I don’t see the need to respond to it.”

Adwoa Safo further asserted her commitment to the NPP, emphasizing that the party belongs to all its members and not to any single individual. “Nobody brought me to the party, and the party doesn’t belong to any one person; we are all here to develop it. No one can push me out or silence me,” she declared.

The former MP also highlighted the growing discontent among the party’s grassroots supporters, urging the General Secretary to pay attention to their concerns. “He should check social media and see how party members are voicing their frustrations about him. With an election approaching in some few years, he needs to avoid being swayed or used for someone else’s agenda. If the base feels neglected and resentful, they will want someone to represent their views,” she warned.

Adwoa Safo also addressed the personal attacks she has faced within the party, describing them as unjust and damaging to her reputation. She expressed her determination to set the record straight and ensure the truth prevails.“I have faced character assassination. My own party has defamed me,” she revealed. “I owe it to myself to set things right and ensure the truth is known. What they have portrayed to undermine me is not accurate. I will ensure the truth is revealed.”

In conclusion, Adwoa Safo reiterated the importance of free expression, stressing that no one should be silenced for sharing their views. “No one should be silenced for speaking their mind, especially since it is a constitutional right,” she affirmed.

As the NPP prepares for future elections, Adow Safo’s outspoken stance highlights the internal tensions within the party and underscores the need for unity and open dialogue to address the concerns of its members. Her remarks have sparked widespread discussion, with many Ghanaians weighing in on the importance of upholding democratic principles within political parties.
